| LAND OF ILLUSION? The
Patriot Act is a law passed right after the September 11, terrorist
attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Its goals are to
reinforce domestic security and expand the powers of law enforcement
agencies supposedly to identify and stop terrorists. "You're either with us or you are against us" as George Bush once said. The Patriot Act expanded the government's ability to investigate terrorism, and of course some of these new powers focused in on domestic terrorism. The definition of domestic terrorism is broad enough to include the activities of several well-known activists and organizations. Such activities could subject them to being investigated as engaging in domestic terrorism. The government can seize assets on the mere claim that there is probable cause to believe that the assets were involved in domestic terrorism. The assets of course are seized before a person is given a hearing, and often without notice. In short, without the full due process afforded in criminal cases, the U.S. government can bankrupt political groups it asserts are involved in domestic terrorism. The Biden administration also is presently pushing a plan to combat domestic terror. It will enhance its analysis of threats from domestic terrorists, which includes the sharing of intelligence within law enforcement agencies, and will work with tech companies to eliminate terrorist content online as part of a nationwide strategy to fight domestic terrorism. How did we go from fighting the terrorist to accusing the very people who fought 'the war against terror' of being terrorist? You're either with us or you are against us defenders of freedom. This new strategy also includes labeling dissidents and anti-government militias as domestic violent extremists, or white supremacists. Enforcing a new system to methodically track civilians nationwide within the FBI. If the Patriot Act were to expire, the government would lose their edge in its opposition to its own citizens... THEY WILL NEVER LET THIS OCCUR! Somehow we got into this predicament... Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Meaning that whenever a person has power over other people or things, it leads to corruption. As our liberties are systematically taken away lacking any efficient punishment for this corruption, a time when justice fails as the opportunity passes us by decree. |
